The start of July marks a significant milestone for our team at BMS as we notch up our 30th year providing IT support to local businesses in the Illawarra and beyond.
It also gives us a nice little excuse to take a brief walk down memory lane and reflect on how far BMS has come in this time...
It was a humble beginning for Paul and Kay Brady in July of 1984. Starting a business together at 121 Corrimal Street Wollongong, they sold typewriters, answering machines, phone systems, photocopiers and fax machines to local businesses so that they could be more productive. They called themselves Business Machine Specialists. Over the following thirty years, our team has grown from just two employees, to a thriving organisation with more than thirty five employees, and an expanded offering that includes IT services and document management.
All the while however, remaining true to our original purpose of helping businesses be more productive. I can attest first hand to the evolution that BMS has made along with technology over the past thirty years. Employed by Shaun Minogue as a Sales Support Secretary in 1990, I have had the opportunity to work in every area of the organisation until I was given the opportunity to take over the leadership reigns from him in January of this year.
Having been a part of the BMS team for such a long time, it’s like having an extended family. Working with a team of enthusiastic and motivated professionals is something I appreciate every day. We are a team that is never complacent - always looking for ways we can better ourselves and go that extra step to help our customers. It’s been part of our DNA since our doors opened in 1984. I am proud of our business achievements, but I am extremely proud of the support we have been able to provide for so many businesses across the Illawarra for so long now.
We are now known as The BMS Group, and glad to say we have been able to help over 5,000 customers to date with their IT, document management and printing needs. And not just in the Illawarra but as far north as the Sutherland Shire, as far south as Ulladulla, and across to the Southern Highlands and Macarthur Regions.
We have a policy of never wanting to be more than an hour’s drive from a customer in need, so you have no doubt seen one of the many BMS technician cars driving past – they are never far away in all their blue and orange glory!
We are also very proud to be supporting the Illawarra community. With an internal culture of helping others, the partnership we have with Greenacres Disability Services came about in 2013 and this has been a wonderful opportunity to employ two young men on a part time basis and provide work experience opportunities for several others.
So, as there is much to reflect on and celebrate from the past thirty years, we now look toward the next thirty. It’s an exciting time for us. We are always in search of new technology that will support our customers so their business can grow. And with so much cloud based opportunity ahead, we are glad that we can help businesses become more globally competitive, while they remain local.
But at the end of the day, there would be little to celebrate if it wasn’t for the people that have been associated with The BMS Group in any way over the past three decades. We might be in the business of helping other businesses, but we see ourselves as people helping people. Without people we aren’t the sum of very much at all – no matter what we claim to do or for how long we claim to have done it.
That’s what we are most grateful for – people. And that is what we are truly celebrating.
