Reduce the environmental footprint of your printer fleet

Eco-friendly printing

Many companies are looking for practical ways to cut costs and help the environment.  Typically, in a tight economy, it is difficult to adopt green initiatives because they can seem expensive.  However, with a few simple adjustments, your company can effectively cut costs and significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

Create a green printing strategy and reduce paper usage

A green printing strategy aims at reducing the carbon footprint of office printing.  The two biggest areas that can be impacted are paper usage and energy consumption. When these areas are optimised, the environmental and economic impact can be huge.

One box of paper uses approximately 30% of a tree and requires approximately 11.25kg of greenhouse gas to produce. Furthermore, the average office employee consumes 2 cases of paper each year.

One simple strategy to reduce paper usage is to adjust the default setting on your printers and copiers. Automatic duplexed (two-sided) printing can easily reduce your paper usage by up to 50%. On top of saving trees, this small adjustment can also reduce your annual paper cost by almost half.

Consolidate Printer and Copier Devices

Copiers and printers have to use heat to fuse the toner to paper. In order to produce the heat necessary, large amounts of energy must be consumed. The average office copier consumes 285 KWh of electricity each month and an average printer consumes 49 KWh each month. With the surging cost of electricity, this means a company with 10 copiers and 50 printers spends at least $14,000 a year powering these devices.

Many companies have realized that they can consolidate printer and copier devices with Energy Star certified multifunction systems. The smaller printer fleet requires less energy to operate, but is still optimized to handle document volumes. This can easily save about $3,000 in electricity costs each year.

Green Faxing

Did you know you can set most fax machines to save documents on a network folder rather than printing out a paper document? Green faxing saves paper and toner and allows you to easily transfer faxes to the intended person via email.
